  2. Tips and tricks to save data
Tracking Data Usage

Tracking your data usage is an important step to making sure you don’t run out of data. You can track your detailed usage in the Public Mobile app or via our periodic usage notifications.

Using the Public Mobile App or My Account

To see exactly how much of your data you’ve used, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to the Public Mobile app or My Account
  2. Your data usage is displayed on the 'Subscription' tab.
  3. The usage meter indicates your data consumption during the current cycle and the total available data from your plan and active data add-ons.
    • The meter will turn red as you approach your data limit (specific percentage to be confirmed).
    • For unlimited data plans, an infinity symbol appears once all full-speed data is used.
    • Swipe to view separate meters for In-Canada plan and US roaming data usage.
  4. Click ‘Usage Breakdown’ beneath the usage meter for details on minutes, texts, and add-on usage.
    • Data usage priority: plan data, promotional data, then add-ons.

If you have a data add-on you can view the usage of that add on in the ‘Add-On Usage’ section of the ‘Overview’ page. If you’ve run out of data and need to purchase more, you can also do that in this section. Learn how here.

Using Our Data Usage Notifications

We’ll send you an SMS when you’ve used 75% of your data as well as when you’ve used 95% of it. Note that these notifications do not account for any add-ons you may have purchased.

Tips And Tricks To Save Data

There are a few steps you can take to ensure that you’re not using more data than you need to while using your phone. Here are a few of our recommendations:

Autoplay

  • Many apps (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube) have Autoplay which automatically plays videos in your news feed as you scroll through the app
  • Disable Autoplay or set it to work using Wi-Fi only for your most used apps

GPS Navigation

  • Use free navigation apps like Google Maps, which offers offline navigation, instead of GPS navigation that requires mobile data

Disable automatic updates & background refresh

  • When your phone is set to automatically update your apps, it can consume a lot of data without your knowledge. You can change this setting on your phone to manually update your apps when you're on Wi-Fi only
  • Some apps (like those for email) use data to periodically check for new messages. Turn this background refresh off so that they only check when you’re on WiFi

Limit streaming quality

  • You can reduce the quality of the video and music content to save data. Most streaming apps have the option to change the quality to a lower resolution
